Valencienne Goby Fish

Photo of Valencienne Goby

When you like variety in a reef aquarium, both in color and size, you might consider this interesting medium-sized fish. The Valenciennea Muralis, is more commonly known as the Valencienne Goby or Orange Goby, although strictly speaking, its color is not a true orange.

The Valencienne Goby at adulthood measures an average of five inches long, with a narrow body for ease of zipping in and out of caves and small spaces.

Their coloring consists of red vertical stripes outlined with blue, on the slightly larger head, with some extension of the stripes onto the body. The dorsal fin has reds stripes and a dark tip while the anal fin has only the strips, and the caudal fin has red ocelli. Just below the mouth is an area of bright yellow.

In nature you would find them inhabiting the shallow areas around a lagoon reef, with adults pairing off for life, and youngsters living in small groups. They eat tiny sea creatures by sifting sand through their mouths, but in your reef aquarium, will appreciate a diet of shrimp, mosquito larvae and tubifex worms.

In ideal conditions, the Valencienne Goby can spawn as often as every 8-10 days. The female will lay her eggs on the underside of a rock, which means providing her with a handy surface, such as a cave made from flat pieces of shale that is thoroughly cleaned. Once eggs are attached, the male comes along and fertilizes them, then remains to "fan" the eggs for the 4-5 days it takes to hatch.
