What Are the Most Common Saltwater Fish to Start a Tank With?

When you first get your saltwater tank started, you may not be able to include some of the tropical fish you were hoping for. It takes time for a tank to become stable enough for many species, but that doesn't meant there aren't any beautiful fish you can start with.

You can usually start with hearty varieties of blennies, damselfish and gobies. These fish have some beautiful species within their family and you'll be able to set up a nice-looking starter aquarium. Be patient with your aquarium and realize it may be 6 months to a year before you aquarium will be considered stable for some of the more difficult to maintain species.

Recommended: You'll find more information on starting your own saltwater aquarium, we recommend picking up the Complete Encyclopedia of the Saltwater Aquarium.
