Feeding Your Goldfish

Goldfish are one of the simplest of fish to feed, with little in specialized needs, but with some tips for a cleaner aquarium.

A good brand of food will carry all the protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins that they need, in either flake or pellet form. For the most part, you'll find that your goldfish like to feed at the top, or as the food drifts down through the water. So it's a good idea to only put in a pinch at a time, judged by the size and number of your fish. If it's not cleaned up in 2-3 minutes, make it a smaller pinch the next time.

Keep the protein in your goldfish diet below 30%. In their natural environment, the influx of Spring rains that bring fresh hatchings of edible creatures, increases the protein in their diet and can bring on spawning. If you are trying to breed your goldfish, then feed them higher protein content when you want spawning, and also changes 10% of the tank water, every couple of days.

Your fish will also enjoy snacks of live shrimp, and mosquito larvae. If these aren't available live, then dried is good, as are frozen treats. Again, the same rule about overfeeding applies.

Considering that food can remain in the tank, either as uneaten material, or feces, you need an efficient pump and filtration system, to keep it cleaned. Even if the tank is all goldfish, it doesn't hurt to have a couple of small tropical catfish to scavenge the bottom for you.

Another tip, is to use floating feeding rings, which "corral" food on the surface, making it easier to remove, if the fish are not interested.
