Nitrogen Cycle for Your Fish

[menus/top-google.htm]

The nitrogen cycle is the process of converting toxic nitrogenous wastes and ammonia into harmless products. Bacteria converts solid waste to nitrate. Nitrate is then used by plants as fertilizer.

In nature, this process happens easily but in the aquarium you will need to facilitate the process.

There are three types of filtration:

  • Mechanical - Manually sifts particles suspended in water. This is a fairly quick filtering method.
  • Chemical - Use of chemicals to treat the water
  • Biological - This is the most natural method, but it can take a while to get working properly.
