Tropical Fish Net

[menus/top-google.htm]

The type of tropical fish nets that you need, are dictated by the kinds of fish you have, their hardiness, size, and length of fins. Most hobbyists will keep two or three nets of varying sizes in mesh, and actual net size, to accommodate all the fish they have.

As a rule of thumb, it is better to go with a finer mesh, to cover a broader range of fish. For example, in an emergency rescue of baby guppies, you can grab a net that’s six inches across, and still have netting fine enough to capture them, whereas that six inch net may actually be meant for a larger fish whose fins would be perfectly safe in a larger mesh net.

Very fine mesh measures approximately 1/64 of an inch. Many people opt for a medium range mesh of 1/32”. One of the disadvantages of finer mesh, is that water will drain out of it slower. To help in the process, dip your net in the water first, to moisten it thoroughly, before attempting to catch a fish.

If you are keeping only very large species such as Oscars, then a 1/16” mesh is more than adequate. This would also need to be a net of fairly large dimensions, since adult Oscars can measure up to 12”.

Most aquarium net handles come in reinforced three-ply nylon for greater durability, and ease of maneuvering. The dimensions of the net frame/opening, will depend on the size of your fish. If you have livebearers, or even egg layers that will breed, you should have at least one small net of 2-4” width, and fine mesh, for catching the young. Then at least one if not two more medium mesh nets that will accommodate the size range of your fish.
